Sizing the Visceral Aortic Market: 345 Specialists, Four Regions, One Survey
Sizing a market requires a sample with reach, and this one exceeded the target in every region.
A manufacturer developing a device for aneurysms near or involving the renal arteries wanted to know whether the visceral segment is worth investing in and how to segment it.
The answer called for a quantitative read across regions. A blinded, 10-minute online survey ran in two waves:
First wave: the US, Europe, and Japan
Second wave: China
The criteria were the same throughout. Physicians had to personally perform at least five endovascular AAA cases in a typical year, and to have treated at least one specified combination of visceral vessels with stent grafts. The target mix in each region was two-thirds vascular surgeons and one-third cardiothoracic surgeons, interventional radiologists and interventional cardiologists.
In every region, we beat the target:
Europe: 162 (target 120)
China: 75 (target 70)
US: 68 (target 50)
Japan: 40 (target 30)
In Europe, completions came from Germany (45), Italy (37), France (23), Spain (19), the UK (18), the Netherlands (10) and the Nordics (10).
The planned specialty split held in most countries. The exceptions were Japan and France, where fewer vascular surgeons took part.
Data was not weighted, and running both waves to one design let the client compare regions directly.
