Finding High-Volume Users of Liquid Embolics
A broad landscape survey of 227 interventional radiologists, vascular surgeons, and interventional cardiologists identified as high-volume liquid users was conducted, and they then evaluated a new agent.
A manufacturer wanted to understand the embolization market and how physicians would react to a new liquid embolic agent.
The study ran in three steps.
First, 20 double-blinded online qualitative interviews with interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons in the US and the five largest markets in Europe shaped the survey design.
Second, a market landscape survey was completed by 227 physicians: 150 interventional radiologists, 68 vascular surgeons and nine interventional cardiologists. Ninety-seven were in the US, with the rest spread across France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.
Third, high-volume liquid users from the first survey were invited to evaluate the new agent. Thresholds differed by specialty:
Interventional radiologists: 40 embolizations across three indications
Vascular surgeons: 12 embolizations across two indications
Interventional cardiologists: 6 embolizations
In total, 105 physicians, 46% of the first sample, completed the evaluation.
Screening data was useful too. Of 493 physicians screened, European physicians were about twice as likely as US colleagues to use liquid embolics.
The two-survey design gave the client a broad market picture from the full sample, as well as detailed product feedback from the physicians most likely to adopt it.
